Canon PIXMA MG3650 Printer Review– The Canon Pixma MG3650 is an affordable and versatile multifunction inkjet printer for home users – but, as always with low-cost printers, you need to pay attention to the cost of replacing ink cartridges.
The £ 61.99 we quote is – as always – the manufacturer’s suggested price. However, you can easily find them online, and even in stores, for under £ 50. You can buy them from John Lewis for £ 49.99, for example, and from Currys for £ 44.99. It is available in black or white.
The low price means the MG3650 doesn’t have a lot of frills. There’s no LCD control screen, for example. There is only a small set of buttons in the upper left corner of the printer and the phrase that came to mind when we checked the build quality was “cheap and cheerful”.
The cover for the scanner unit looked very thin and we almost removed it when we first set up the printer. It doesn’t even have a suitable internal paper tray, instead relying on a small plastic cover that folds from the front of the unit to support a stack of up to 100 sheets of A4 paper. But at least it keeps the overall size of the printer low, and the MG3650 will easily fit into the nearest shelf or table without taking up too much space.
MG3650 Features
There may not be a color screen but you will find all the major printing features you might need. Along with its main printer, scanner and copier functions, the MG3650 provides USB and Wi-Fi connectivity, along with duplex (two-sided) printing and support for Apple’s AirPrint for iOS devices. There are also apps for iOS and Android that provide additional options for printing photos, as well as the ability to control the scanner and save scanned images directly to your mobile device.
MG3650 Performance
Printing performance is also great for these low-cost devices. Print speed is relatively modest – we got nine pages per minute when printing simple text documents, and 5ppm for color, while 6x4in postcard printing took 50 seconds – but it should be fine for everyday home use. Text and graphic output are both great, and our photo prints are bright and colorful, so the MG3650 can definitely handle a variety of printing tasks.
However, the alarm bell started ringing as soon as we saw the small size of Canon’s ink cartridge. If you shop online you can find a standard black ink cartridge for around £ 11, while a standard three-color cartridge – which includes all three inks cyan, magenta and yellow – costs around £ 14.That doesn’t seem so bad to you found that the black cartridge only lasted for 180 pages, which resulted in over 6p per page – an unbelievable price for simple text printing. Fortunately, the XL’s bigger black cartridge provides better value, costing around £ 17 for 600 pages. That brings the price down to 2.8p per page, but even that is still slightly above average for mono printing.
Fortunately, color printing makes more sense. At £ 14, the standard tricolor cartridge costs you around 7.8p per pence per page, which is pretty average for inkjet color printing. Upgrade to an XL cartridge for £ 18 and the cost drops to a very reasonable 4.5p per page. Even so, the high price of Canon’s black ink cartridges remains disappointing. Canon’s rivals have introduced new products such as Epson’s Ecotank printers and HP Instant Ink subscriptions, which help greatly reduce long-term printing costs, while Canon seems content with its traditional approach to selling its printers cheaply and making big profits. on the replacement cartridge.
